Earnin Referral Program

EARNIN REFERRAL PROGRAM | PRODUCT DESIGN, CONTENT WRITING

I was the lead product designer on the revamp of Earnin’s referral program in 2021, continuing into 2022.

The program needed an end-to-end redesign to consider the full flow of the user experience from the first discover of the program to both-sides reward payout. I led the strategy, research, product design and saw the program through to rollout in fall 2021.

PROCESS

I started by doing an audit of best-in-class referral programs with notes on what made them successful, shortcomings, etc. These examples were both from other fintech brands and from successful referral programs in other apps.

After doing a competitive audit, I compiled a summary in a deck, along with goals, parameters for the next iteration of our referral program, past learnings, and more. I pitched this deck to leadership at Earnin, and got buy-in before beginning on hi-fi designs.

I designed MVP flows and came up with some ideas for what previous referral programs may have been missing. I worked with product teams to determine all of the needs cross-functionally for operationalizing the program, and brainstormed with other product designers, our growth team, and leadership on what we could do to improve on what we’d already tried with referrals at Earnin.

FINAL PRODUCT

The final product was a simple, whole-flow experience that carried Earnin community members all the way through discovery of the program, to reward redemption once a referral redeems the promotion. My work included:

  • Push notification copy/content

  • SMS text copy/content

  • Custom landing page designs for web signup experience

  • Content writing for all in-app content

  • Design of promo cards, notification center messages, and all in-app product design

  • Referral redemption flow in signup

  • Addition of multiple entry points throughout typical user journey in-app
